Mark Levinson Sound System Information

GX470s equipped with the Mark Levinson system have limited options for speaker upgrades (unless the owner would like to replace the entire system). This is due to the fact that the stock Mark Levinson amp runs speakers rated for 8 ohms.

The information on this page is intended for someone looking to simply repair/replace blown speakers while retaining the Mark Levinson amp.

Disclaimer: a “confirmed” fit simply means someone successfully installed the speaker in their vehicle. However, it does not mean that no modification was necesarry during the install. I have included what little information can be found on required modifications for specific speakers.

The Lexus Part numbers for all stock Mark Levinson speaker assemblies are as follows:

Front Seat
  • (2) Front Door Lower Speakers: 86160-0W560
  • (2) Front Door Upper Speakers: 86160-0W610

Repair

If the only issue with 6x9s is that the foam surround has deteriorated it can be repaired/replaced using this kit: Lexus Mark Levinson Speaker Foam Edge Repair Kit, 86160-0W420, 6759, FSK-6x9TOY.

If the speaker has voice coil scraping it is likely you will want to replace the speakers.

Replacement Speakers

When replacing the front 6x9s it may be helpful to purchase new speaker adapters and speaker wire adapters.

Some have reported to needing to modify the 6×9 speaker adapter for some of the aftermarket options.

Converting to 6.5" Speakers

Some choose to convert the front 6x9s to 6.5“. This is because 6.5” speakers are more readily available and also because the back door speakers are already 6.5“.

The conversion requires 6×9” to 6.5“ speaker adapters. The most common adapter recommended is the TacoTunes Toyota 4Runner 6.5 6.75 Heavy Duty Speaker Adapter Front Door Installation Kit.

It has also been said that a washer needs to be added between the door and the Tacotunes adapter on the rear driver's side door. This is because the window regulator could scrape the magnet of the speaker. The other passenger side did not require a washer.

Compatible speakers can be found in the backdoor speaker section below.

Backdoor Speakers

When replacing the backdoor speakers with aftermarket be aware that you may need increased depth in order to fit the speaker. You can achieve this with this with the TacoTunes Toyota 4Runner 6.5 6.75 Heavy Duty Speaker Adapter Rear Door Installation Kit.

If a fit below is “unconfirmed” it is probably a good idea to go ahead and purchase the adapter set.

Rear/Cargo Speakers

"Subwoofer"

Repair

If the only issue with the subwoofer is that the foam surround has deteriorated it can be repaired/replaced using this kit: Toyota, Lexus 6" Single Foam Speaker Repair Kit FSK-6bt-1 (SINGLE).

If the speaker has voice coil scraping it is likely you will want to replace the speaker within the stock housing OR tap into the wiring and install an external subwoofer within the cargo area.

Replacement Speakers

I have not been able to find a confirmed speaker replacement (beside OEM from eBay) for the stock subwoofer housing. This is because the factory sub is a 6” low-throw speaker in a sealed box. There's not much room for anything bigger. The most common upgrade is extending the wires out and putting a box in the cargo area.

The following replacement speakers simply match the 8 ohm requirement (and 6“ size) for the ML amp. I have found one person that replaced the subwoofer speaker with an aftermarket speaker by using an adapter and cutting the plastic panel trim piece. See this thread for more information.

PRV Audio 6MB250-NDY Link 8 125 Unknown Unknown $51.69 Unconfirmed Single

External Woofer Box

A user on ih8mud posted this in a thread related to their own external subwoofer install.

I ripped out the useless 6” sub box and put in a external 8“ wired to the same stock amp (just extended wire out, box sits behind passenger second row seat pointing to back of truck). This sub driver is made for small enclosures as I didn't want a huge box back there. Its a 8” driver but requires a 9“ hole in the box and a 10” grill. Really deep and punchy bass even from the stock amp. Doesn't come in under $100 but wanted to keep this all together. So happy with this setup. - Source
